FRIENDS HELP BUY NEW SCANNER Higher numbers of patients across Devon can now be treated at their local hospital thanks to a new mobile ultrasound scanner. It was bought jointly in July 2016 by the League of Friends of five community hospitals for use by the RD & E Vascular Surgical Unit. This is the first occasion that hospital equipment has been purchased jointly by participating Leagues of Friends. Those involved included Tiverton, Exmouth, Ottery St. Mary, Okehampton and Axminster. Each location will benefit from the scanner which will be used by Vascular Surgeon Mr. Andrew Cowan FRCS, who is clinical lead for vascular surgery and already holds outpatient clinics at Tiverton. He explains that this will enable approximately 20 people per month to receive treatment at Tiverton and up to 90 at the other respective hospitals. This equipment is already proving extremely beneficial in helping to treat patients closer to home instead of having to refer them to the RD&E. This is particularly relevant for the elderly and frail who often need arteries and veins scanned, and the Vascular Surgical Unit is extremely grateful to each League of Friends for making this possible.
Our picture shows our Chairman, Mr. Arthur Govier with Mr. Andrew Cowan FRCS the vascular surgeon, and the mobile ultrasound scanner now already in use.
